NT residents have been able to have their say about the new Local Government reform process at a series of community meetings over many months.
The meetings focused on the needs of each community and service delivery through the new Shires. Members of the Transition Committees accompanied by interpreters and staff from DLGHS visited about 60 communities to ensure all residents had input and an understanding of the new Local Government changes. An Indigenous storyboard was developed as a tool to assist in the communication of the changes within the more remote communities of the Northern Territory.
Since the reform was announced in January 2007, DLGHS, together with the Local Government Advisory Board and the Transition Committees have engaged with all local government bodies to ensure they are aware of what is being proposed and how we will work towards establishing the new Shires.
Already some 200 people from across the Northern Territory regularly provide feedback and advice through the Transition Committees and Advisory Board.
